Definition:
Hunger Sunday – the first Sunday of every month, when Covenant members donate nonperishable food items to be delivered to two food pantries for distribution to those in need.
For more than sixteen years, Covenant members have been participating in Hunger Sunday. Until this year all food has been delivered to St. Paul United Methodist Church, near the corner of Triana and Bob Wallace. St. Paul’s food pantry serves more than 1200 families annually, including over 2000 children. Each family receives a 3-4 day supply of food.
This year, we have also been delivering to Trinity Presbyterian Church on Holmes Ave. near Jordan Lane. This church serves a smaller area, but the need is just as great. We alternate between the two churches on a monthly basis.
St. Paul United Methodist also serves as a source for items specifically for babies and infants, such as diapers, baby formula, and baby food. A number of food pantries which receive the above items, including Trinity, send them to St. Paul’s for distribution.
Volunteers at both St. Paul’s and Trinity remind donors that, with school having started and cooler weather here, there is a need for canned soup and chili. Also, each group likes to include some fruit when they put together their bags of groceries, and canned fruit is always in short supply. |
