Who we are

We are a community group of job searchers. Anyone who is looking for their next job may participate. You don't have to be a member of Covenant. Participation is not restricted to people who are out of work. People who are currently employed but looking for their next job are welcome. The more active participants seem to find work more quickly. There's only one requirement to join our group and that is to participate. Discussions are kept to job hunting techniques and supporting each other.

What we do

Our motto is "Keeping spirits up!" We do this by uplifting each other and showing each other that we care. You may not always come to the meetngs in a good mood, but we guarantee you'll leave them feeling better.

Where we meet

We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays in Room 5 of Covenant Presbyterian Church at 7:00 PM and on the other Thursdays at Qdoba's restaurant on Whitesburg.

Why we meet

We know what it's like to be looking for a job. Everyone who is seeking employment faces massive doses of rejection every time they reach out. The support group offers a place where people care what is happening in their lives. Since founding the group about three years ago, it has taken on a life of its own. It is part of the outreach ministry at Covenant.

How it works

At each meeting there's a 15-20 minute lesson on some tip or technique. Then we go around the room asking first for successes since the last time we met. Sometimes a community leader speaks at the meetings. This is accountability time! A success must be something better (related to the job search) than what was reported at the last meeting. It has been very effective in drawing out some of the participants who are having a hard time. After the successes, we go around the room again asking for everyone's challenges since the last meeting. For almost every challenge, there are suggestions around the room on how to overcome that challenge. Many of the suggestions are excellent and help the challenged to overcome it. We also encourage the participants to contact each other and share opportunities that they find with others in the group.

We also do role playing to prepare the participants for their challenges. Role play subjects include phone calls, stress interviews, and interviews. Sometimes a guest speaker will come in to talk to the group about what they look for in a candidate.

We cover basics like how to dress for the interview, what to say, how to say it, and when to say it. We also review resumes and offer suggestions for improvement.
