The Covenant Long Rang Planning Committee determined that Covenant needs more parking to grow. The land east of playground and Christian Education building was the logical choice. A civil engineering firm, 4-SITE, designed a parking lot with 92 spaces with access to both Downing Street and the existing parking areas.
The storm water detention and drainage system required a piping connection into the storm drain system on Drake Avenue. This will require extensive rock removal to install the pipe. In January 2006 the City of Huntsville approached the Trustees with a storm drainage project that would require an easement for a concrete pipe across Covenant’s land. After several design meetings, a plan was finalized which integrated the Covenant and City plans.
The net result has an economic benefit for the Church. The City will be building approximately 180 feet of drainage system that would have been Covenant’s responsibility. Including the payment for easement, the savings to Covenant will be $40 - 45,000! The City has also agreed to any future repair cost if their system required work.
