Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Gratitude is a theme that runs through God’s Word:
“Enter God’s gates with thanksgiving . . .” - Psalm 100
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.” - Psalm 136
“One of (the lepers), when he saw that he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him . . .” - Luke 17:15-16
“I thank my God every time I remember you.” - Philippians 1:3
“ . . . give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” - I Thessalonians 5:18
And for good reason. I find that when I give thanks to God for blessings received, I feel better, I am uplifted. I have a more positive view of life. I enjoy life more. Why is this so?
I think I enjoy life more when I give thanks because I focus my energy on what I have, rather than emphasizing what I don’t have. Perhaps gratitude grows out of a sense of peace; but I am certain that gratitude leads me to a greater sense of peace.
As we approach Christmas 2006 and the New Year 2007, might we consider making Christmas a time to focus on what we have, not on what we don’t have and want. I have so very much for which to be thankful:
· the love of my Savior and Lord Jesus Christ
· an inheritance laid up for me forever
· the gift of life, and the health to enjoy it
· rich relationships with my family
· a Covenant church family through which God’s love shines
· a home for shelter
· food and clothes
I could go on and on.
Take some time this Christmas to open presents as we receive things we want; but also, take time to express gratitude for what we have.
Such gratitude changes lives, changes families, changes the world.
Merry Christmas, with joy,
Hal
