It’s All Gone!

This past week, HRS, the company hired to remove all asbestos from Fellowship Hall and from the Adult wing of the Education building, completed its work. The process is called asbestos remediation. In our case, remediation consisted of removing the very old floor tiles which had formed the original floor in both buildings, then scouring and treating the concrete floor under the tile.

In preparation for remediation we had to remove everything from the rooms and hallway. Most of the contents of the adult classrooms and staff storage were moved to the two PODS storage units south of the sanctuary. Covenant youth, including Robert Gray, Elijah Hicks, Cody Fee, and Elissa Estopinal, provided the majority of the work in loading the units with help from adults Darrin Gieger and John Fee. Donations were made to the HS Mission Trip fund as payment for their work.

Note: The Turner-Universal offices (rooms 1 and 3) have not been remediated, but will be done at a later date.

Progress You Can See

When you get a chance, stop in the hallway outside Fellowship Hall. What you will see is a new set of glass doors into Fellowship Hall. If you look through the glass, you will see newly-laid carpet (three different designs) and, to your right, a glass wall and a new set of doors that open out into the plaza between FH and the children’s wing.

Next steps in the renovation of Fellowship Hall are the completion of the wall treatments and installation of new ceiling lights. This work should be completed around April 2.

Revised Schedule of Completion

An unusually cold and wet winter has played havoc with outside work, including roofing the new building and grading and surfacing the new parking lot. In addition, a manufacturing error by the carpet supplier in which the machine making the carpet decided to run off a different pattern, (the technical term for this malfunction is “OOPS”), has caused a delay in carpeting the new building and the adult wing. The correct carpet should be delivered this coming week.

What does this all mean?

Renovation of the adult classrooms in the south wing will hopefully be completed in time for classes to resume on March 29, rather than March 22.

Fellowship Hall will be available April 5.

The new building will be available in mid-April. It will take one to two weeks for us to move our new furniture into the building, so we are projecting that we will occupy the new building late in April.

We hope to begin using the new parking lot in time for Easter. If it is not available, we have already put plans in place to offer shuttle service from Randolph School east from the church on Drake.

Correction on Children’s Wing Status

It was reported in an earlier EXTRA that the children’s wing had passed inspection. That turned out to be untrue. The fire marshal required a test of the newly installed sprinkler system to complete the inspection and decided that the test would take place after the sprinkler system in the new building had been installed. That installation has not been completed.

Your Prayers Needed!

The Building Committee asks for your prayers that the weather will cooperate over the next six weeks (rain only at night and on Sundays!)
