Director of Children’s Ministry Covenant Presbyterian Church – Huntsville, Alabama

Job Classification: Part-time Professional Ministry (15 hours weekly)
Salary: $15,000 Annually
Purpose: To plan, coordinate, and implement a ministry for the children of Covenant Presbyterian Church (nursery through fifth grade), under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Scriptures, and to serve as an advocate on behalf of the children and their families in the overall programming of the church.
The Ideal Candidate: will have outstanding organizational abilities and excellent social skills. The candidate should possess a deep personal faith in Jesus Christ and commitment to continued spiritual growth.
Responsibilities:
Coordination and Direction
Recruit, train, and provide encouragement to develop a team of volunteers in order to implement regular and seasonal programming. A key responsibility of all staff at Covenant is to build and launch other leaders.
Coordinate all children’s ministries at Covenant, both ongoing and seasonal, creating new programs and changing existing programs as God leads. Oversee all special children’s events including Easter, Christmas and Vacation Bible School, periodic service project or family events.
Coordinate implementation of a holistic Biblical curriculum in coordination with Children’s Discipleship Team and pastoral staff for children 3 years old – 5th grade that adheres to a “reformed” Presbyterian theological perspective. The children’s director will work with the pastoral staff and receive direction to make sure that the curriculum aligns with this perspective.
Moderate the Children’s Discipleship Team (a committee of parents and volunteers) as a voting member. The Children’s Director will lead meetings that inform and mobilize volunteers on safety, curriculum, and upcoming events.
Ensure compliance with Covenant’s Child Safety Policy with the serving elder on the Children’s Discipleship Team. Implement security measures and yearly training for adult leaders, ensuring all leaders, teachers and nursery staff have updated background checks.
Submit an annual budget for children’s ministry to the Board of Trustees in August and responsibly adhere to the approved budget. Submit information for church annual report.
Inform the entire congregation concerning the children’s programs, educate them as to the importance of children’s ministries, and encourage their participation in family ministry activities and their support and attendance at events where the children are demonstrating what they have learned.
Supervise and guide the work of the Nursery Coordinator. The Children’s Director will communicate childcare needs to the The Nursery Coordinator and The Nursery Coordinator then schedules the needed childcare workers. The Nursery Coordinator is responsible for the hiring and supervision of childcare workers, ensuring background checks and training.
Attend staff meetings. Coordinate with staff through digital platforms like “Asana” and ensure that communication about upcoming events is submitted for the weekly newsletter.
Meet bi-monthly with supervisor to both plan as well as spend time learning and thinking through how to adapt/teach curriculum and children from a “reformed” theological perspective.
Evangelism and Outreach
Guide children and volunteers into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Equip others to share Christ both in church programming and in their daily lives.
Deliver a weekly children’s message during worship services that will be shared with the entire congregation either via video or in-person.
Maintain contact with Covenant Preschool as an avenue of outreach, and sit on the Preschool Board as a voting member.
Keep accurate attendance records in “Blackbaud” software and create informative emails & Social Media / photos / stories alongside the Communications Director that share more about the children’s ministry with prospective and current families.
Build relationships with families.
Cooperate in initiatives with staff colleagues to engage young families in the life of the church.
Discipleship and Spiritual Growth
Maintain a commitment to continued spiritual and professional growth through the practice of personal Bible study and prayer as well as seeking out continuing education opportunities (funding available from Church).
